The ALDE Group in the European Parliament reacted strongly Thursday to attacks by Bulgaria's PM, Boyko Borisov, in connection with the troubled hearing of the Bulgarian Commissioner-designate Rumiana Jeleva.

“It is absolutely unacceptable for a Prime Minister to use such strong language when speaking about Members of the European Parliament who are just trying to do their job during the hearings of the candidates for the new European Commission. The EP would do a bad service to the people who have voted for them if they abandon their responsibilities,” the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) in the EP, Guy Verhofstadt, said quoted by the Bulgarian news agency BTA.

ALDE further points out that the hearings are expected to be a thorough and public test of the competencies and the financial honesty of each candidate and the MEPS have the right and the obligation to clarify matters in order to avoid future difficulties with the European Commission.

ALDE declare they stand firm behind the Bulgarian ALDE group in their raising really alarming issues.

“We can only be interested in the transparency and accountability and this is not conspiracy play as PM Borisov says,” Verhofstadt points out.
