The European Parliament has submitted Thursday a letter to the EC President Jose Manuel Barroso asking for his position on the confirmation of Bulgarian Commissioner-Designate Rumiana Jeleva.
The letter, which was expected to be sent as early as Tuesday night, after the end of Jeleva’s troubled hearing, has been signed by the political coordinators of the EP Development Committee from all parties including Jeleva’s own European People’s Party.
The brief letter has been signed by EP Chair Jerzy Buzek. It contains only two questions for EP President Barroso: first, if Jeleva provided all necessary financial information in accordance with the ethics code of the EP as concerns the conflict of interest allegations, and, second, if after her hearing Barroso believes she can fulfill properly the functions of the new EU Commissioner in charge of international cooperation, humanitarian aid, and crisis prevention.
The MEPs are requesting an answer from Barroso by the end of the day on Friday, December 15, 2010.
After Jeleva’s performance during her EP hearing has been widely regarded as unconvincing and as having failed to disprove the allegations that she was involved in conflict of interests during her time as a MEP in 2007-2009, Barroso’s position is seen as a key factor on whether she would be confirmed as a Commissioner.
