Some 30 Bulgarians have been recruited to work in a new restaurant in the Burj Dubai building, the world’s tallest building, that opened on January 4.

They have been hired to work in a new Armani restaurant that will open inside the building in mid-March. This will be the first restaurant to bear the name of the famous fashion designer Giorgio Armani.

An additional 40 qualified Bulgarian personnel have also succeeded in obtaining work in the huge complex. Most are young persons with experience of working in the quality hotels of the Black Sea costal resorts.

Meantime, the architecture of the Burj Dubai has been heavily criticized by German architects, who have stated that the complex has set a bad example for building design.

Meinhard von Gerkan, designer of the Berlin central train station, said the building was a "pointless" symbol of power and prestige.

His professional colleague Christian Baumgart, president of the German Architects' Association, stated that the glass tower "hardly represents a sustainable contribution to current world building practices".

He added that, while European architecture valued refurbishing or upgrading existing buildings rather than building vast new developments: "Nobody knows where the planning hubris of the sheikhs will lead".

Von Gerkan also warned that The Burj would suffer from astronomical maintenance costs and would never make a profit.

The building was designed by British architect Adrian Smith. It has 160 floors, using 330 000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete, and 103 000 square meters of glass.

At 828 meters, it is some 300 meters taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.
