Dusan Mrakic, Serbia’s State Secretary for the Energy Ministry, has announced that his country is actively investigating the possibility of diversifying its national gas supplies.
"Serbia is ready and it will continue negotiating with all the surrounding countries when it comes to natural gas interconnectedness, beginning with Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and the construction of a pipeline towards Montenegro and Croatia,” Mrakic said on Monday.
He explained that the country’s first priority was to carry out a feasibility study on the projected South Stream pipeline being routed through Serbia.
He expected the study to be completed early in 2010, after which the Serbian government would be able to consider alternative supply routes, to lessen the current total dependence on Russian gas.
Mrakic refuted recent speculation that Serbia had lost out on opportunities to diversify, stating that Serbia has not missed any chances to connect to the natural gas pipeline between Burgas in Bulgaria and Alexandroupolis in Greece.
