Pharmacists in Bulgaria are preparing to protest against a recently passed bill that permits the sale of medicines through vending machines
At least two cases of pharmacists with fake diplomas running drugstores have been detected in Bulgaria recently.
The fake pharmacists had been confirmed by the Supreme Pharmacy Council at the Health Ministry, the bTV channel reported.
In one of the cases, a woman who has been running a pharmacy since 2003 has been discovered to have a fake pharmacist diploma from the Sofia Medical University when members of the Register of Sofia pharmacists saw that her diploma included subjects such as political economy which is totally untypical for the respective major. The university confirmed the diploma was fake.
Since the fraud was discovered, the woman has been reappointed as an assistant pharmacist which does not require a diploma. If sued, she stands chances of getting up to 8 years in jail for forging a legal document. A similar case has been detected in the city of Burgas.
The Pharmacists’ Union, the Health Ministry, and representatives of the medical universities have started talks to set up a register of all pharmacist diplomas issues since the 1970s in order to prevent such abuses.
