The former District Governor of Bulgaria’s Veliko Tarnovo, Toshko Nikiforov, has committed suicide.

Nikiforov was found shot in the head Sunday afternoon in his car in the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa outside of his apartment.

The police have announced that he was shot with his own gun and most likely committed suicide.

Nikiforov was the District Governor of Veliko Tarnovo in 2005-2009, during the entire term of the Stanishev government. He was a member of the NMSP party of former Tsar Simeon Saxe-Coburg.

Nikiforov ran for Mayor of Gorna Oryahovitsa from the NMSP in 2007, and for an MP from the NMSP party in July 2009 (the NMSP failed to make it to Parliament).

Before becoming District Governor, Nikiforov was head of the Police Department in Gorna Oryahovitsa.
