The 3D TV revolution is just around the corner and may be here in time for the World Cup football next summer.

Sky has successfully filmed sports and arts programmes in three dimensions and plans to launch a channel with exclusive 3D content next year.

Three-dimensional television is distinctly different from cinema 3D, with the images set back “beyond the screen” rather than giving the appearance of characters jumping into the viewers’ laps as it does at the movies.

To watch it, you will need to buy a special “3D Ready” television, which currently costs around £2,000 and will be available next year, as well as polarising glasses that can give you the extra dimension.

For the fashion conscious, Gucci is  already working on a pair of 3D specs while prescriptive 3D glasses are also in development.

Sky said: “We are committed to launching a channel next year. It will offer a broad selection of the best available 3D programming, spanning movies, entertainment and sport.

“The service will be broadcast across Sky’s existing HD infrastructure and be available to all Sky+HD boxes.”
