Bulgaria ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party leader, Ahmed Dogan, has given a sign that he is set to resign from his post.

Dogan, speaking at the national DPS party conference on Saturday said “there comes a time for separation of a parent from their baby. I know that you are not ready for this inevitable act, but this should happen.”

He added that DPS should not be a party enshrined in its leadership but that this had happened. Dogan also said that the socialist-led tri-partite former government, in which DPS was a part, had been “the most successful government since the communist regime left Bulgaria.”

Dogan concluded by supporting Turkey’s aim to join the EU; "Attitudes of EU countries to the inclusion of Turkey into the Union is straining the basic value system of Europe and especially the historical foundations of European identity and tolerance.”
