Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and his fellow GERB party member, the newly elected Mayor of Sofia, Iordanka Fandakova, inaugurated a cogeneration installation at Sofia's water purification facility.

The project is valued at BGN 5 M and is the largest and most significant investment of the “Sofia Water” utility for 2009.

Borisov said it was about time Sofia became an European city, which is impossible without modern sewage. The PM further pointed out the Sofia purification station is the largest on the Balkans, adding that until now the sewage waters were simply disposed of in the underground waters.

The project was launched in the beginning of the year and allows for the full utilization of the biogas emanated during the treatment of sewage waters.
