The uncle of Bulgaria pop-folk star Azis, Hristo Varbanov (Palata), has been arrested for blackmailing the ex-head of the ‘Civil Protection’ department, Nikola Nikolov.
Nikolov allegedly gave Varbanov BGN 150 000 to stop him turning documents over to the media that would have incriminated him for abuse of his position.
One of the meetings between the two occurred in the presence of a famous leader of the Roma party in Bulgaria, Darik Radio reported.
Four people have been arrested over the case. Varbanov has a criminal record, and there have been a number of attempts on his life.
