Bulgaria joins Tuesday many countries all over the world in marking Worlds Aids Day.

World Aids Day aims at bringing people together to initiate discussions about AIDS, break the silence and increase awareness about the disease.

In Bulgaria, medical facilities in most regional centers will carry out free and anonymous consultations and HIV tests. The initiative is part of the Health Ministry's anti-AIDS campaign.

33 million people are HIV positive around the world and 3 million get infected every year.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS data shows there are 1 071 confirmed HIV cases in Bulgaria, but Dr Tonka Varleva, Head of Bulgaria’s Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS program, says that the real number of HIV-positive people in the country is about 4 000.
