Sofia to Increase Tourist Tax, Affects Airbnb and Hotel Rates
Sofia Municipality plans to raise the tourist tax starting next year, pending approval from the Sofia Municipal Council
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has asked the Members of Parliament to reconsider the motion for increasing the excise tax on hard liquor.
Borisov himself announced this after Wednesday’s meeting of the cabinet. Last week the Budget Committee of the Bulgarian Parliament voted to increase the excise on hard liquor starting January 2010 – a measure which was going to affect the homemaking of traditional Bulgarian brandy – or “rakia”.
The motion spurred a controversy as Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov said it would harm the agricultural producers and especially the grape growing, whereas Finance Minister Simeon Djankov declared he would use the BGN 61 M expected to come from the higher excise for securing medications and treatment for cancer patients.
