Bulgaria is an abnormal situation in which the unemployment is rising while the business sector is creating jobs but cannot find the skilled workers needed.

This was stated Thursday in the town of Sevlievo by Bulgaria’s Labor Minister, Totyu Mladenov.

“It is not normal to have an unemployment rate of over 8%, i.e. 300 000 unemployed, and to witness how the private sector is unable to find qualified laborers,” Mladenov said reiterating his statements from Tuesday when he met with the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria.

In his words, Bulgaria’s private sector creates about 10-12 000 jobs every month but many of the vacancies cannot be filled because of a shortage of qualified laborers. Some 5 200 positions for skilled labor in the fields of the processing and extracting industry, health care and education remained unoccupied in October 2009.

“Bulgarians must understand that because of the dynamics of the global economy their only opportunity to have a chance of the labor market, and to receive higher pay is the constant qualification and re-qualification,” Mladenov declared.
