Ten municipal councilors, including the owner of Skat TV, have cancelled their membership of far-right party ‘Ataka’ in Bulgaria's Burgas and declared themselves as independent.

The leader of the ‘Ataka’ party group in Burgas and owner of Skat TV, Valeri Simeonov, stated that he "absolutely disagrees with the parliamentary group of Ataka and leadership of the party."

According to Simeonov, the ten councilors "do not recognize the actions of the parliamentary group regarding the twenty principles and goals of the party for which they entered into the local government.”

Simeonov added that he and his colleagues were bewildered as to why since they entered the local Burgas council, neither ‘Ataka’ leader Volen Siderov, nor any of the other central party leadership had visited Bourgas. He also was angry that Ataka have not given an opinion on the construction of the Burgas – Alexandropolis natural gas pipeline and that they have not demanded the immediate withdrawal of Turkish-language news on national television.

The councilors concluded by saying that they were also discontented with the 100% support given by ‘Ataka’ to the new center-right GERB government.

Skat TV had been the main voice box and PR capmign leader for Siderov and Ataka since 2005. The move will also mean that ‘Ataka’ loses its majority in the Burgas municipality council – a constituency where the party has been traditionally strong.
