Bulgarian criminal investigators discovered 150 kilos of amphetamines and 2 tablet-pressing machines hidden in a private house in the Sofia village of Vladaya.
This has been announced Tuesday by the Director of the Unit for Fighting Organized Crime (GDBOP), Stanimir Florov.
The operation had been conducted jointly by GDBOP and the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
The unnamed Vladaya home owner, an unemployed carpenter, has been taken into police custody.
He had furnished his house and installed special insulation in such a way that the noise of the tablet-pressing machines could not heard from outside.
He had also adapted the house, so that he could enter his garage without going outside and arousing his neighbors’ suspicions.
Most probably the raw amphetamine was produced abroad, according to Florov. The tablets produced here in Bulgaria are said to bear the logo “Captagon”, he added.
It is possible that local and foreign traffickers trade the narcotic substances through barter deals.
A single kilo of amphetamine – enough to make 6 000 tablets – trades for USD 2 000, with heroin valued at USD 5 000 to USD 7 000.
