During his first 100 days in office Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has distinguished itself with his swift and oftentimes very proper reactions.

This is the opinion of Ivan Kostov, former PM (1997-2001) and Co-Chair of the rightist Blue Coalition, which supports the government of Borisov’s party GERB in the Parliament with its 14 MPs. (GERB has 116.)

According to Kostov, PM Borisov has addressed all issues on the national agenda, has positions of his own, and presents them to the media in a timely manner.

“Preserving people’s trust in these 100 emergency days is something that we welcome. If this had not been Borisov’s attitude, there were going to be “fires” all over the country now. It is another matter if the Borisov has the time to dig deeper into the problems,” said Kostov, who is also the Chair of the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party.

Kostov believes the fact that the GERB government managed to retain people’s trust in its first 100 days was a key factor for getting the country out of the economic crisis since it was a good foundation for realizing the cabinet’s program.

The rightist leader did make some recommendations for Borisov including the transferring the functions of the Parliamentary Committee on Information Security to the National Security Agency DANS, and of the Parliamentary Committee on illegally acquired property (known as the Kushlev Committee) to the Prosecutor’s Office; merging the Bulgarian Development Bank into the Bulgarian National Bank, and a merger of the Privatization Agency and the Agency for Post-Privatization Control.

Kostov said his political formation was ready to support the proposed 2010 draft budget, which he defined as “the first realistic state budget”. He did express his apprehension, however, of the fact that there is talk of updating the budget in the middle of 2010 which could create an impression of financial instability. He also recommended that the budget of the Parliament, the Presidency, and the Council of Ministers be reduced.
