At least five people died when a residential building collapsed overnight in Majorca's capital Palma, in the Spanish Balearic Islands.

The three-storey structure, said to be at least 50 years old, collapsed at about 0030 (2230 GMT on Sunday).

Rescuers are searching for five people who are unaccounted for, and believed to be in the rubble. Four others were injured in the collapse, two seriously.

Amongst the dead are a young girl of about 16, a woman of about 30 and two men in their 60s. The fifth casualty has only just been found and no more details have been released for the moment.

The local gas supplier has ruled out a gas leak as a possible cause.

There is nothing to indicate that foreigners are among the dead.
