The Ukraine has banned import of Bulgarian lamb because of cases of brucellosis established in the northern Bulgarian city of Lovech.

The ban has been imposed by the Ukrainian State Committee on Veterinary Medicine.

However, Bulgaria's National Veterinary Service has announced that it has not detected any cases of brucellosis in Lovech region, but the decease scrapie.

Scrapie is a fatal, degenerative disease that affects the nervous systems of sheep and goats. The decease is infectious and transmissible among similar animals. Scrapie has been known since the 18th century and does not appear to be transmissible to humans.

The Veterinary Service reminded that one scrapie case was detected earlier in October. The European Commission and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) have been informed about this, and information about it was issued on OIE's website October 2.
