The measures that the new Bulgarian government of the GERB party has taken in its first months are promising.

This is the opinion of His Excellency Paul Beijer, Sweden's Ambassador to Bulgaria, shared in an interview for Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency).

Beijer has pointed out that the GERB government had demonstrated its strong commitment to tackling Bulgaria's issues, which had attracted criticism by the European Commission, which is a crucial prerequisite for coping with them.

His Excellency has stressed the opinion of leading Bulgarian analysts that corruption, organized crime, and the issues of the judicial system were probably more detrimental to Bulgaria's economic development than the effects of the global financial crisis.

"I don't think even an EU developing towards a superstate can provide a solution to the challenge of weak Bulgarian institutions... Bulgaria has to accomplish these changes by its own efforts. No one else can do it for you," Ambassador Beijer has stated.
