The University of National and World Economy in Bulgaria's capital Sofia has fired Petkan Iliev, an Assistant Professor of Economics, over corruption allegations.

"After the charging of Assistant Professor Petkan Iliev by the Interior Ministry structures in corruption schemes for buying pass grades at exams, term certifications, and allowing persons to take exams for others with fake documentation, until the court issues a verdict, I as President believe it is unacceptable to have him participate in the academic process of the UNWE," the school president Borislav Borisov said in his ordinance for the disciplinary discharge of Iliev.

The allegedly corrupt Bulgarian professor of economics, Petkan Iliev, was busted in July as a mastermind of a whole corruption scheme at the UNWE in which students paid between BGN 300 and BGN 4 000 to be admitted to the university, or to pass their exams.

He was later released on a BGN 10 000 bail. Ilieve's arrest on corruption charges came as a shock to many as he is known to the wider Bulgarian public as a current affairs commentator on topics including countering corruption, and as a textbook and book writer.
