The 56-year-old sailor, Panko Todorov, who was flown back to Bulgaria from Iran by the Bulgarian government, has woken up from his coma.

Dr Niolay Petrov from the Military Hospital in Sofia said Todorov had woken up and was able to make some contact with relatives and doctors. He added however that he is still in a serious condition.

Todorov was originally said to have had a stroke by the Iranian doctor treating him but Dr Petrov said it is too early to tell what exactly he is suffering from.

Todorov was serving on a Cypriot-owned ship sailing under Panamanian flag when he felt sick. Shortly after his hospitalization in Iran, he was already in a coma.

On Friday, the new Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, decided to send a special plane to bring the sick sailor back to Bulgaria.
