One in every four new Bulgarian drivers acquires their license by paying for it.

This was announced Friday by Yonko Ivanov, Chair of the Union of Driving Instructors, as quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.

Ivanov said between 1 900 and 2 500 were trained as student drivers in Sofia in just a year which was practically impossible given the number of driving instructors and the facilities.

Representatives of the Union are going meet with Bulgaria's new Transport Minister, Alexander Tsvetkov, next week in order to discuss the introduction of video cameras, and inspections by independent experts in a move to curb corruption in the training and tests for acquiring a driver's license.

Volodya Kirov, the outgoing head of the Automobile Administration Agency, resigned two days ago, and Minister Tsvetkov has appointed to his position his deputy Luybomir Hristov with the task to cope with corruption. The institution is yet to adopt special measures in this respect.
