The President of the southern Russian Republic of Ingushetia has survived an assassination attempt Monday morning even though he is still in a critical condition.
Yunus-Bek Yevkurov was hospitalized after a car bomb was detonated next to his convoy in the Ingushetia capital Nazran. The assassination attempt was made around 8:30 a.m. local time.
The bomb killed four and wounded another five of Yevkurov's bodyguards. A special medical team has flown out of the Russian capital Moscow in order to help save Yevkurov's life.
According to members of the Russian Duma cited by ITAR-TASS, the assassination attempt has been carried out by extremists after the President started to enforce a stricter order in Ingushetia.
Yevkurov is the third senior official to be wounded or killed in Ingushetia in the past three weeks and the fourth in the North Caucasus this month. Ingushetia is located in Russia's volatile North Caucasus, and neighbors Chechnya.
