Bulgaria Grapples with Soaring Corruption Rates: New Report Reveals Shocking Data
Corruption in Bulgaria has soared to its third highest peak in history, according to a recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy
A doctor from the northern Bulgarian city of Lovech was sentenced Saturday to 3,5 years in jail over corruption and document crimes.
The doctor, Boryana Hinova, is the former Chair of the regional Labor Expert Medical Commission in Lovech, whose function is to examine the medical condition of people with disabilities, and decide whether they qualify for a state pension.
Hinova and her team repeatedly issued fake documents to healthy people authorizing them to receive state pensions as if they were disabled in exchange for bribes.
In addition to Hinova, two more former doctors, Ivan Ivanov, and Borislav Pachkov, from the Commission received suspended sentences. The typist Lyubka Raikova, and another employee of the Commission, Denka Mircheva, were each sentenced to 3 years in jail as they were also involved in the corruption scheme.
The trial of the corrupt doctors from Lovech has lasted for more than a year. The sentences can be appealed before the Appellate Court within 15 days.
