EU Parliament to Debate Bulgaria’s Rule of Law After Varna Mayor’s Arrest

With an average age of a little over 47, Bulgaria's present 18 deputies are the second "youngest" in the European Parliament.
The top position is held by the MEPs of Malta (an average age of 45), according to a study of the Center for European Policy cited by BTA information agency.
The study points out that the last two enlargements - with 10 new members in 2004, and with Bulgaria and Romania in 2007, have led to a "younger" European Parliament as the average age of the MEPs who served in 2004-2009 is 54,8, compared to 57,2 for the previous European Parliament.
The average age of the MEPs from the EU 15 is higher than that of their colleagues from the 12 new member states - 56,5 years of age compared to 52,2 for the Eastern states' deputies.
The study has also concluded that Bulgaria ranks 7th among the 27 EU members in the number of its MEPs who are women (38% of the 18 Bulgarian deputies).
A recent study of the Votewatch organization has shown that only 6 of a total of 785 MEPs in the present European Parliament attended all plenary and committee sessions that they were supposed to attend. One of them is the MEP from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Evgeni Kirilov.
After the 2009 European Parliament Elections, the total number of MEPs will be reduced from 785 to 736. Bulgaria's MEPs will be reduced by one to 17 from the present number of 18.
