Mobile phone sales decreased by a record amount by 13% to 245 million purchases year-on-year in the first quarter of 2009 over the global financial crisis.

A report done by Strategy Analytics said all of the five biggest mobile phone-makers had drops in sales. The company reminds that the previous worst quarter for mobile phone sales was in the third quarter of 2001, the BBC reported.

The world's largest mobile phone maker, Nokia, sales dropped by 19% to 115,5 million units. Motorola announced a turnover of USD 5,4 B for the first quarter of 2009 which is down by 28% year-on-year.

Sony Ericsson sold 14,5 million mobile phones between January and March, which a 35% decrease compared to the first quarter of 2008.

Samsung sales fell 1% to 46,3 million units, and Korea's LG had a 7% drop in sales, to 24,4 million units.
The iPhone, the first Apple phone, had sales of 3,8 million, compared to 1,7 million units in 2008.
