Dangerous Melamine Content Discovered in Bulgarian-made Wafers

Dangerous doses of the organic base melanine have been discovered in wafers and other candy made by a large-scale Bulgarian producer.

The melanin concentration is several times above the legally allowed melanine content, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported. The name of the wafer brand, however, has not been disclosed.

A representative of the Sofia Regional Public Health Directorate has stated the wafer producer and its facilities were not located on their territory, and that they had alerted their colleagues from the respective Bulgarian region, without specifying which region that was.

Asia was recently shaken by a melanine scandal after inspections in Hong Kong in September 2008.

Expect further details.
