Bulgarian authorities will begin closing pharmacies for not requesting prescriptions from customers.

The news was announced by the Chair of the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union, (BFU) Miroslav Nenchev.

The measure will be taken after a third consecutive violation is established. For the first one the pharmacies will receive a warning, while the second provides for a fine of the amount of five minimum monthly wages.

The Act prohibiting the sale of medications without a prescription, when the manufacturer had explicitly stated that such prescription was needed, was adopted in Bulgaria 20 years ago, but never strictly enforced.

According to Gabriela Vuteva, BFU Secretary, a large number of Bulgarians take medications that have been prescribed to them 7-8 years ago, or even worse, simply recommended by others.

Another restriction was imposed on pharmacies in Bulgaria earlier in the week - pharmacies can no longer sell baby food and supplements. Bulgarian pharmacists oppose the measure on the base that baby food is currently sold at gas stations, but cannot be sold by them.
