Bulgaria Seat Belt Campaign Sees more than 2 200 Tickets Issued in Bulgaria: Seat Belt Campaign Sees more than 2 200 Tickets Issued in Bulgaria

A week-long police enforcement campaign on drivers and passengers not using seat belts has resulted in the issue of more than 132 000 penalties across Europe, 2 265 of which were in Bulgaria.

The campaign in February was co-ordinated by TISPOL, the pan-European traffic police organisation. Officers in 23 countries across Europe stopped drivers of all ages who were flouting seat belt laws.

The number of penalties issued in Bulgaria puts the country in a group with Denmark, Finland, Greece, Lithuania, Netherlands and Switzerland. The top scorer is Germany with 41 035 penalties, followed by Romania (22 016) and Ukraine (8 065).

"The time has long gone when a driver or passenger can see seat belt wearing as a matter of personal choice," says TISPOL President Wolfgang Blindenbacher. "Make no mistake, the forces experienced during a road collision mean unrestrained vehicle occupants have a far greater potential to kill not only themselves but also others around them.

"That's why wearing a seat belt is not a matter of choice and we will continue to use vigorous enforcement strategies which back up the continuing education campaigns."

The TISPOL Organisation has been established by the traffic police forces of Europe in order to improve road safety and law enforcement on the roads of Europe. Its main priority is to reduce the number of people being killed and seriously injured on Europe's roads.
