Foreign Tourist Numbers Hit Hard

The number of foreign visitors traveling to Bulgaria has again dropped dramatically, with a 6.7% year on year decrease in December 2008, according to the National Statistical Institute (NSI) released Tuesday.

There has been a large decrease in visitors from the EU, with the greatest fall seen in citizens from France - 11.3%, Portugal - 10.8%, Hungary -10.3% and the UK - 8.2%. For the same period there was also some positive news , with the numbers of visitors from Italy, Spain and Romania increasing.

The number of foreign tourists choosing Bulgaria as a holiday destination was the most affected, while business trips and people transiting the country saw less of a decrease.

The number of Bulgarians who traveled abroad in December also fell, with an overall decrease of 9.1%. The most affected countries by this decline were the US and Canada - over 55%. Meanwhile more Bulgarians traveled to Slovakia 80.1%, Malta and Turkey - over 6%.
