Commenting article: Are Bulgarians Their Own Worse Enemy?

The thing you become aware of when you first come to Bulgarian is the indifference to most things from the Bulgarian people and their general attitude to life around them. When questioned about this they quote the well-known Bulgarian turn of phrase- "what can we do"?

There doesn't seem to be any signs of insurgency from the people about anything and that's why the vermin (politicians, most people in a position of power and criminals) are robbing everyone. Nothing or no one is untouched by the Bulgarian syndrome of corruption and complacency.

The recent racist attacks on praying Muslims in Sofia have not really resonated with the populous and the response predictably has been small. It's the same with everything here and that's why the cartels and monopolies get away with murder- because they can!!

Keith, l2English plz :)

Philippe - 28 Jun 2011 // 20:05:30

Keith, it's hopeless; Even your efforts are a waste of time.

KaelThas - 28 Jun 2011 // 20:11:01

This "Keith" is either illiterate or an imposer.
Even the headline is grammatically incorrect:

It should be:
"Are Bulgarians their own worst enemy"

I highly doubt that this "Keith Gregory"'s native language is English as the name might suggest.

Wouldn't be surprised that it is an alias for the web owner MB trying to animate his own business...

SuOcrack - 28 Jun 2011 // 23:17:22

It is a "Letter to the Editor".

I am the first person to deplore poor spelling and grammar. However, in this case we can give them a bit of leeway as the only real spelling error is in the heading and that may have been imposed by the editor.

Apart from that, it is a venomous diatribe that can best be forgotten.

ankle - 29 Jun 2011 // 12:30:47

Why don't you discuss the contents and stop being a pompous prat's ?

ankle - 29 Jun 2011 // 12:46:17

If you were not so stupid and used your eyes you would see that all the headings on here are in capital letters.......

At least the person who wrote it has an opinion and has expressed it on here.... Lets hear yours ?

I've just noticed that your English is not so hot, this is how you should spell leeway...lee-way.

Lol, you must be joking. Get a new dictionary.

You're right of course, Keith. But its unlikely that anybody in the Bulgarian establishment reads this column or they'd probably 'persuade' the editor to close it down. It's almost a clich? that becoming a politician in Bulgaria is less of a vocation and more a business opportunity.

ankle - 2 Jul 2011 // 17:30:22

The sad thing is, it's the ordinary Bulgarians that need to do something and as you can see by this forum they don't.... Just pick holes in grammar and spelling.

The heading of this article should be... Bulgarians are their worst enemy !!!

hercules - 10 Aug 2011 // 10:55:08

The answer to this question is…. yes, yes, and yes.

There’s the third world and then there’s Bulgaria and that’s what Bulgarians think of their country!

Hutch - 10 Aug 2011 // 21:40:11

Of course Bulgarian's are their own worst enemy!

"The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty. Plainly, the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of liberty."
Abraham Lincoln

"Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."
Thomas Jefferson

Liberty, according to my metaphysics is a self-determining power in an intellectual agent. It implies thought and choice and power. Bulgarian's only think about how to rob or scam others because they lack the ability to think rationally; their choice and power can easily be seen by their choice in Prime Minister Boyko Borissov!

Need I say more?

(Please check my grammar and spelling! Xa xa xa!)

The worse thing is that Bulgarians never defend themselves against the criticism that’s written about their country and the majority of their fellow citizens.

Now that’s acute apathy!

sa-sha - 11 Aug 2011 // 12:07:34

"...Bulgarians never defend themselves against the criticism..." Absolute true.
"Bulgarian's only think about how to rob or scam others..." Absolute delirium. Still
'to think about' is extremely better tnan to 'kill around'... NATO's pilot, Italian, has
bombed & killed Gaddafi's nephews. They were 3-year,2-year & 4-month old. 'A self-
determinating power in an intellectual agent' (demonstrated in action by that Italian)
is 'Liberty', may be. Liberty to kill. I'd like to look that educated & informed Italian's
face & ask him what he would do if it were his children? How he would reply to such
'education', to such implying 'thought and choice and power', to such visual demonstration of 'Liberty'.....
