Commenting article: Netherlands, Spain Get Ready for Historical World Cup Final

The star teams of the Netherlands and Spain are facing each other in South Africa 2010 World Cup final Sunday night.

The match, which will produce a brand-new new world champion that has never held the title before, will take place at 9:30 pm local time on the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, after Saturday night when Germany beat Uruguay 3:2 in the match for the third place.

The 2010 World Cup final is historical not just because it will add a new nation to the teams that have won the trophy but will also mark the first time that an European country will win the title outside of Europe.

This is my brief report from the aquarium.

I am surrounded by friendly octapae with names like Paul, Paolo, Pavlo, Pavlito, Pauletta and Paula. We have a consensus and it is: Spain.

Enjoy the game with the assurance that its outcome is already predetermined.

Viva Espana!

Yes, that's the general consensus.

3-Germany (done deal)

Just to throw a bit of doubt to make things interesting.

The story goes that Paul the Octopus had predicted wrong the Euro Germany vs. Spain in 2008. He predicted then a Germany win but his mistake was attributed to inexperience. At the time Paul was six months old and usually octopae live for about 2.5-3 years. So, now Paul is old and wise @ 2.5 years and the little sad part is that he is not going to be around for the next World Cup.

So here it is for the friends of Holland. There is a possibility that Paul might be wrong but try telling this to an older man.

Good luck!

Holland will be crowned world champions tonight finally ending their World Cup jinx..the 12000km convoy drive from Holland to South Africa by die-hard Dutch fans will be rewarded with the cup which in my opinion they should have to display to all on the long drive home, their sheer devotion to a team that have done them proud has been .truly inspirational. A lot of people are going to be upset if Paul was wrong, but I'm prepared to wish Holland well.

I second Bill's opinion. I have no pony in this race. I am just making light conversation and I wish an entertaining final. Spain is the European champion until dethroned. And since this is a European final(the logic goes).....Paul must know something.

German TV is showing the respective lineups for the start of the match.

Credit where due, the Dutch attack looks impressive.

BULERICAN - 11 Jul 2010 // 22:00:21

I see a frustrated orange attack that is turning physical.

Spain is still patiently looking for the way through.

Bill - 11 Jul 2010 // 22:19:37

Netherlan ds - Spain: 0-0 at half time

Heavy on the yellow cards. More in the first half than in the entire German game.

De Jong was v-e-r-y lucky he didn't get a red card for that one!

BULERICAN - 11 Jul 2010 // 22:30:22

Commentators say he should be gone... (De Jong)

MASSIVE defense from both sides.

Spain I think is slowly finding the way through, all the nasty fould by the orange is saying frustration.

BULERICAN - 11 Jul 2010 // 22:51:09

C A S I L L A S - - - - - - - O L E !!!

Bill - 11 Jul 2010 // 23:23:28

N etherlands -Spain: 0-0 at full time.

A less tolerant referee would have issued two red cards by now.

Bill - 11 Jul 2010 // 23:26:11

"C A S I L L A S - - - - - - - O L E !!!"

That save with the tip of his toe was brilliant. You don't get anything less than a supershot past him, and there haven't been any.

Bill - 12 Jul 2010 // 00:03:58

Netherlands - Spain: 0-1 after overtime.

Good a way as any to avoid a penalty shoot-out.

I wonder if Nellie thouight

Bill - 12 Jul 2010 // 00:04:59

Damn! Posted again in mid-sentence.

I wonder if Nellie thought THIS match was boring.
