Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has admitted that he got into a “trap” over the proposed referendum on the 10-minute Turkish-language news emissions on the national TV channel.
Borisov told Darik Radio Saturday that President Georgi Parvanov, who warned of a trap after the PM declared himself in favor of a motion for a referendum put forth by the nationalist Ataka party, had been right.
“The President was right when he said now was not the time for that. At the same time, these are things that annoy the people. But I do think that such a referendum will not be accepted well in Europe – that is, to have the majority impose on the minority its decision about its minority rights. I do hope that the Parliament will take a reasonable stand on this issue,” Borisov declared....
Well, that is just what we all have been thinking. After the falling apart of Yane Yanev and his RSC, he needs the support of Ataka even more in order not to be dependent only on Kostov.
Such an referendum will have a similar effect like the referendum in Switzerland over the minarets. It will harm Bulgarias already rampaged image a bit more. Sure, Switzerland had made a bigger fall.
In times when pensioners get 25lv Christmas presents a 15 Mio. BGN expensive referendum for just 10 min turkish news is more then superfluous. At the same time the most popular TV channels airing every week a new turkish soap opera.
You can only laugh at the hipocrits.
Democracy should be about equality and freedom. An equal right to power (access and influence over functions of the state), and within reason the freedom to live and do as you please. Unfortunately, the liberals seem determined to take away peoples freedoms to the point of being Stalinist, while the 'right' seem determined to disrespect peoples' equal right to power to the point of idiocy. Abandoning the principles of democracy eventually leads to revolution, or war!
"Democracy should be about equality and freedom."
Democracy guarantees mediocrity. The majority rule ensures that the morons are in control. There is not excellence in government possible in a democracy. In a democracy excellence is only possible on an individual basis. People who have the freedom and the capability to achieve do achieve. A democratic government achieves nothing but the rule of the mob. Bulgaria is in deep trouble because the Bulgarian mob is seriously deficient in all respects.
