"The Varna Airport saw a 53% increase in the number of passengers using the internal Bulgarian airlines in 2008."
Perhaps this has something to do with the sh*tty transport alternatives? By road, 7-8 hours from Sofia, which is ridiculous. Even longer by train, but at least you can sleep, assuming you are not burned to death!
When I have to go to Sofia, I take the plane. Half an hour in the air...
I know that's not green, but due to lack of alternatives, I don't give a sh***.
Last time I drove 8 hours with heaves snowfall from Sofia to Varna. If we wouldn't had a SUV, that would be mission impossible.
And in the trains they shortened the sleeping cars. Now it's just one car with beds. The rest has to remain seated...
An ICE in Germany makes this distance in 3 hours...
The price of a ticket from Sofia to Varna (one way) depends as always when you buy it, if you are lucky you can get a cheap ticket for 20levs.. if you are unlucky you can push the 200lev mark... everything is about timing.
Also the prices are increased for the holiday periods.
The train is the least desired option to travel between Varna and Sofia. Smelly, old, either way too hot or way too cold and it takes forever. I have made the trip by train as there were no alternatives at the time and I had to be in Sofia in time to catch a flight. Airport Varna closed due to heavy snowfall so my flight from Varna to Sofia got cancelled, roads were icy, so traveling by bus with those kamikazes from Etap was also not a very good idea. What a horror experience that traintrip was, even while I had a bed in a sleeping car; six people in an area 1,5m x 2m x 2m, heater at 10, Roma strolling through the main aisles hunting for people's luggage. Usually I'm not too happy when I arrive in Sofia but this time I was very happy (and in time for my flight after escaping 10 taxidrivers waiting for cargo at central station).
Don Hi, Have you tried looking for a flight to Vienna from the States and then fly to Varna. I don,t use Sofia wherever I have been I always travel to Vienna or Budapest and take a flight to Varna from either one. Pricewise there is not a big difference than flying Sofia which is usually fogbound in the winter. Check it out!.
