Interesting on AFOE :
Sure, they may lash out against Sofia, but Greeks shouldn't be too giddy about that, because in a long run they have the most to lose from a fukced up region - diya, if anything illustrates modern Greece's Balkan essence, is your reaction to the events in Bucharest
"I should probably add here that I lived in the Balkans for five years and hope to go back and live there some more. But: Jesus Christ, people. Is it something in the water?"
That's very true.
Yes there is something in the water.
Last time I drove Sofia - Melnik - Thessaloniki and around, I found myself reflecting upon the experience.
It may be because I am history buff, but the mixture between the land, the music, the women, the history is very powerful for a local boy.
To think of all history giants that have walked that land, all the blood that has been spilled there... This is roughly where the fate of the Western world was changed for ever with Caesar's defeat of Pompeii Magnus, thereby the death of the Roman Republic.
There was much action in the north before they joined the battle to the south at Pharsalus.
Not to mention Octavian and Anthony's defeat of Brutus and Cassius at Philippi in northern Greece... and that's just a small part of it - there is so much more.
No wonder that people feel OWNERSHIP of history.
We humans have a schizophrenic relationship with the concept of "owning" on a good day.
I mean do you own your land?
Not really, because I have no idea how many people "owned" all the land I own it today - so in effect I am the temporary GUARDIAN of my land. Much more so with history, but it's difficult to grasp that.
I think I posted this clip before, but some one translated it on Youtube and I find it a good example of the haunting beauty of the region with its history of ethnic hate and violence.
"kill a lot of turkish men and leave their mothers and wives cry
and even their unborn children will cry in the wombs of their
mothers.Giulsume(the name of Delios fiancee) warned him to be
carefull because the turks made a silver bulit to kill him(becaused
they could not catch him the turks believed that he Delio is not a
regular man but ghost and only a siver bulit can kill him). He
answered that there is no man born that could kill him.
Delio went out of the town of Zlatograd(called at that time
Deridere)into the mountain with the men of two big families-
Dombovtsy and Karadjovtsy to become rebel and protector of the
bulgarian people against the turkish slavery. He said to the big
turkish landowners that he has two aunts there and he warns the
turks not to torture them or force them to change their religion
from christian to muslim because when he comes back he will kill
Sad as it is I believe that this little commend wraps-up the issue:
"I don’t think there’s anything in the water’, I just think that the Balkan countries (particularly Macedonia) are too often led by unexperienced leaders that are incapable of long term planning and are satisfied with short term political maneuvers." For Macedonia - at least - it is totally appropriate

Kolegialen, Sir I like your story. You are right, Sir. Hoewever in the last 50 odd years the guys who had run our country, Bulgaria, until today have simply forgotten that their fathers and Grandfather where children of former slaves of the most inhuman empire, the Ottoman, which did not only split the children from their christian family to built the enichary corps, but also periodicaly performed ethnic cleansing by forcing the christian popullation in the european part of the Ottoman empire flee from attrocities, or by selling the christian girls and women on the slave market in the middle East an North Africa. The geographical region Macedonia during the Ottoman rule was mainly inhabited by BUlgarians, so I am also one of those who's Grand Parents where forced to flee,,,
With regard to Uchaks remarks, let him talk whatever he want, Sir, he will never change his mind... Like us, we will never forget our brothers and sisters which have been converted forcefully to Islam... And i hope leaders of the world will not permitt that this is ever going to happen again! If not new Delyu's, new Petko's, new... will emerge!
