Commenting article: Ex-KGB Agent Death Heralds "New Chernobyl"

Health officials have drawn parallels between the murder of the former KGB colonel Alexander Litvinenko in London and the tragedy of the Chernobyl blast.

"This situation is utterly unprecedented," Bernie Wilkins, an environmental assessment officer for the Health Protection Agency told the Guardian. "The last radioactivity incident of this magnitude occurred when the radiation plume from Chernobyl swept over Britain in 1986."
Jan Haverkamp - Greenpeace - 1 Dec 2006 // 19:01:28

The Chernobyl Health report of Greenpeace was issued on on the 18th of April of this year - two weeks before the 20st anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe.

The figure of 9.000 deaths is coming from a study that only looks at deaths by a limited amount of radiation related cancer forms and within the group with relative high exposure in the direct vicinity of the plant and data from liquidators. The Greenpeace study brought together a large amount of well known literature but also many Russian, Belarussian and other studies that had previously not been translated into English.
