Many British women go on holiday with other female friends or relatives and not necessarily with a man. I have found that the attitudes of some men (in the tourist industry as well as on the street) is extremely derisory towards women travelling or staying without men. Those men working in the tourist industry can be trained to treat all their customers with respect regardless of their gender or marital status, but what about the general public? And unfortunately all tourists will come across the general public at some stage and if they are treated with disrespect (ie being told to go back to England if you can't speak Bulgarian) the tourists will not be back.
However, if tourists can speak Bulgarian, they will realise that in tourist areas they are being ripped off. For example in shops near touristic sites, you will be given the real price orally in Bulgarian but the price rung up on the till (so non Bulgarian speakers will only see that price) may be 3 or 4 times the amount spoken. Tourists who realise that non-Bulgarian speakers are being ripped off to such an extent also will not be back. People may expect this is third world countries where prices are dirt cheap in the first place, but Bulgaria is in the EU and the prices there are not that much cheaper (and in some instances more expensive) than in the UK before they start adding on the 'tourist tax'.
