Germany got beaten by Serbia (0-1), Germany won from Australia (4-0), Australia won from Serbia (2-1). As you see, winning from someone 4-0 does not mean too much as the team that got beaten with such difference by turn can defeat the team that beat you.
All I know is that the cup will come to Holland.
Schade, schade, alles ist vorbei! Deutschland ?ber alles? Vielleicht ein anderes jahr, aber sicher nicht nun mit diesem Weltmeisterschaft.
"That DOES seem to be the problem, though, doesn't it?"
How come you think so? The facts are in favor of the Dutch team. Since 2008 (23 matches if I'm correct) they haven't been defeated at all.
In the current championship they have won all matches with one goal difference, with the exception the match against Denmark which had two goals difference.
To win from either Spain or Germany by simply scoring at least one goal more than either one of them does. If it'd mean playing rough and defensive (actually the way Germany used to play), so be it. Holland got its a$$ kicked multiple times although they played the best and most beautiful football. Time for a change, just bring the Cup home.
Well, both countries have something from history that could motivate them. Germany because having lost from Spain in the 2008 EC final, Spain because it'd be a first time for them to reach the final of the world cup.
Regardless which one, Holland has some feelings of revenge for both countries.
1974 - World Cup final Holland - Germany in M?nchen. Holland lost because of a schwalbe by H?lzenbein, who later has admitted it was indeed a schwalbe that delivered a penalty kick against Holland.
1984 - Qualifications for the European Championship in 1984. Holland was leader in the group of which only the number one spot would proceed to the tournament. Spain, in their last match, had to play Malta and had to win with 11 (!!!) goals difference in order to overtake Holland. At half time it was 3-1 for Spain and in the second half they scored nine extra, making it 12-1 for Spain. Extremely fishy and doubtful and everyone is pretty sure some agreement between Spain and Malta has been made which prevented Holland from playing in the tournament.
Although not relevant anymore, but in 1978 Holland lost the World Cup final from Argentina in Buenos Aires. There was absolutely no way Holland was allowed to win that match. Some of our players were injured heavily by the Argentinians. One dutch player played half the match with a broken foot, other players were bleeding heavily. Later it also became clear that the Dutch national team would have had great problems leaving Argentina safely/alive in case the Dutch would have won the World Cup.
Although most of the current players of the Dutch team are too young to have witnessed before described events, these events are very much alive in everyone in Holland. Nothing has been forgotten and certainly not forgiven and it is now all about setting things straight. This is exactly the reason why Holland does not play their normal game of beautiful football and only goes for the result. In the end it does not matter HOW the World Cup has been won, it only matters that they bring it home.
"I'm surprised you're getting into the name-calling phase, too."
Name calling says more about the one calling rather than the one being called. It is usually (99 out of 100) an expression of low self esteem, frustration or very low class.
Just take your pick which is most appropriate here. I guess it is option #2 - frustration. Now you can place bets whether George will resort to even more name calling and asking for locations. In my case, that'd be Varna. Just ask around in the local pubs in the center of Varna for a dutchie and quite likely you'll end up with a lead to me.
Silly people here on this forum, constantly spitting hate and other filth which exposes them for being the kids they claim not to be. Please bear in mind that physical age and position in society mean jack sh!t for that matter.
"but in recent years Holland has lost van basten, van Nistelrooy and 'Ruud gullit."
Marco van Basten retired from football almost two decades ago, Ruud Gullit not too much later. Both have been coaches, but are currently without teams (by choice). Ruud van Nistelrooy is still an active player, now playing for Hamburger Sportverein, in short HSV.
Regarding the bet: My common sense says Brazil will win, my Dutch heart disagrees and says Holland will win and in my dreams I see Holland playing the final against Germany with Holland becoming Weltmeister :-)
Seriously.....anything can happen, it all depends on the moment. In Holland we say "de bal is rond" (the ball is round), meaning that its path usually is very unpredictable.
Just imagine Bulgarians in Belgium demanding information in Bulgarian or Russian on packaging? What would be the reaction to that?
Making things mandatory when it comes to languages is very tricky and sensitive as people will feel it as an attack on their identity. Wars have been fought over way less.
"Learning cyrillic is about learning 26 (is it?) symbols. How hard is that?"
Pretty hard I guess, as one would be missing four characters!
How hard is it to remember the number of characters in the cyrillic alphabet as it is used in Bulgaria? Good that you were in doubt yourself :-)
" If there are more, I'm not aware of them."
Holland has a grass tournament which is also used as training tournament for Wimbledon. It's in Rosmalen and called the Unicef Open. The biggest names playing there in the men's tournament this year were Ljubicic, Robredo and Baghdatis and for the women Henin (winner), Shvedova and Safina.

For friday and saturday: Argentina, Ghana and Brazil out. Have to be as I stick to my prediction and wish for a final Holland - Germany.
