Photo Story: General Turned Mayor. Officially

Photos by Yuliana Nikolova Text by Milena Hristova Boyko Borissov, Sofia new mayor, rolled up his sleeves and did away with a hole in a downtown boulevard days before his inauguration. A few raised brows apart, the initiative fitted smugly with the spotless image he has carefully crafted. That of a man of action. One has every reason to believe it will be like this after Borissov, the former anti-crime fighter, came officially into office as Sofia mayor November 10, on the sixteenth anniversary since the beginning of the democratic changes in Bulgaria. A red carpet, a perfectly polished office and an agenda of sixty items awaited Borissov on the day of his official inauguration. Discussions over the list of draft decisions were postponed, but Borissov's vow sounds promising - to work for the welfare of all Sofia citizens, regardless of the party they support. Before Borissov turns into a true mayor, however, he will have to add to his unblemished image and popularity a few things, intolerance to corruption and forceful methods on top.
