Photo Story: There Goes The Neighbourhood

Photos by Kameliya Atanasova Text by Petya Bondokova (Sofia News Agency) Sofia's quite Friday afternoon, when the air was filled with anticipation for the weekend, was shaken by an unexpected hostage drama in Strelbishte district. Just around lunchtime, gunshots echoed from a local apartment block. Policemen were soon surrounding the place. They were asking people not to get near the block, and did not let cars pass down that street. Teased by curiosity, residents of the nearby buildings came out, asking each other questions about what happened. Rumours were that the mysterious incident was linked to last night's assassination of Georgi Iliev. The underworld-linked tycoon was gunshot at his large nightclub complex at the seaside. Some people were saying that terrorists had apparently penetrated the block. The truth surfaced several hours later. A heavily armed young man under the influence of drugs had seized two people hostages. The attacker, known to be a local drug dealer, demanded media attention to explain that he had been accused unrightfully. It seemed that the incident scared no one. Tens of people - including children - were flocking to the site and circling around the block for the best view into the apartment. The thought that drugs, violence and hostage-taking were not just on television this time seemed to have everyone excited. Thanks to crime and terrorism combaters, the drama ended bloodlessly.
