French authorities unveiled on 12 February a plan to move some migrants out of the makeshift camp on the outskirts of Calais within a week. Some 4,000 to 7,000 migrants live in squalid conditions in the camp known as "The Jungle". An estimated 800 to 1,000 migrants will have to move to purpose-built basic lodgings in converted shipping containers, next to camp, or move to other accommodation centres in France. The authorities plan to create a no-man’s zone in the southern part of the camp in order to keep an eye on asylum seekers trying to reach Britain via the Channel tunnel.
