Commenting article: Sofia 'Most Dangerous City in EU'

The Bulgarian capital Sofia is the fifth most dangerous city in Europe and the most dangerous in the European Union, a study shows.

Moscow, St Petersburg, Kiev and Belgrade have bottomed the personal safety ranking in a recent report of US think-tank Mercer.

The survey, which was published before the attacks in Brussels last week, includes issues such as petty and organized crime and riots and has not included Belgium's capital in the ranking. Stability, rule of law, geopolitical security are also taken into consideration.

Within the EU, Sofia is followed by Bucharest, Zagreb, Riga, Tallinn, Athens, Warsaw, and Budapest - all cities located in Central, Eastern or Southeastern Europe.

Belfast (the EU's No 11), Milan (14), and Barcelona (No 15) are the only cities that are not capitals of European states, but are included in the ranking.

"European cities also dominate the top of the personal safety ranking with Luxembourg in the lead, followed by Bern, Helsinki, and Zurich, which are tied for the number-two spot. Vienna ranks 5th; Geneva and Stockholm are placed jointly in 6th; and Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, and Nurnberg all share 11th place," according to Mercer.

"A number of key or capital cities do rank considerably lower as many suffered either terrorist attacks or social unrest in the last few years; examples include Paris (71), London (72), Madrid (84), and Athens (124). The recent political and economic turmoil in Greece, which resulted in violent demonstrations in Athens and other cities in the country, has undermined its safety ranking. Kiev (189), St. Petersburg (197), and Moscow (206) rank lowest for personal safety in the region."

Separately, Sofia ranks 116th in the global Quality of Living ranking, which leaves it last in the EU, out of 230 cities.

Istanbul in neighboring Turkey comes 122nd in that ranking, while Belgrade is 141st followed by Sarajevo (158), Skopje (159), Moscow (167), Kiev (176), and Minsk (190).

When you arrive in any European City, you are worried of bomb attacks or shootings from terrorists.

Now when you arrive in the United States people stare at you thinking you are a terrorist because you have a dark suntan.

Now in Latin America you are worried of being put in a gun fight between police and drug trafficker or being stung by a mosquito and receiving Zika.

Now in Sofia the pollution and dogs in the street are a safe heaven for the "Final Judgement".

Maybe the agenda is to stop people in Sofia having the freedom to protest. This will come from the EU where we have seen protesters against the invasion of their countries and the attacking of their women and children arrested while the invaders and attackers have been left free to commit further crimes. Do not allow the EU to remove Bulgarias freedom of speech

The population of street dogs is greatly reduced here. I haven't seen any packs of the for quite a while now - unless you count the lethargic band lazing in the comparative warmth and hoping for scraps outside a certain flat-pack furniture retailer on the Ring Road. There are plenty of "fixed" and tagged street dogs but they are pretty docile now; it's maybe best not to enquire too closely into the fate of the missing ones.

Well, it is dangerously ugly, as well as dangerously toxic, with its wall-to-wall automobiles belching out its dangerous toxins..
Any recent up-dates on its dangerous 10,000 stray dog population?

The urbanization of Sofia with failing infrastructure can be an issue but "danger" is an over reaction that can be defined that the Bulgarian Politician fails to protect the CITY.

TheRealBehemoth - 1 Apr 2016 // 17:01:36 everyone knows who has been in Sofia or lives here, it is not a particularly dangerous city. The bad rating has something to do with the methodology of the study. Sofia is performing so bad in the Mercer study because of its particularly poor performance in the sub-indicator "social unrest". The constant protests against the government and political elite for various issues, although justified and usually very peaceful and organized, are considered a "threat to the security". Which is of course ridiculous, since the protests are usually not violent and there are also no terrorist groups worth mentioning. So, no reason to get excited, it is just a pity that many people who don't know better believe crappy studies like this one.

This report is crazy, I mean is Sofia dangerous? No. Are other cities filled with more divided minds that can create unsafe social issues? Yes. Sofia isn't dangerous at all unless you have been involved in the criminal and fraudulent underworld. For the average person, Sofia is very safe.

?t would be interesting to know the criteria used to make statements such as Sofia is the most dangerous city in the EU. I cannot believe that riots, petty theft and organized crime ( which happen just about everywhere else too) are worse than mass raping of women and children and blowing up shopping malls, airports and the public transport systems

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to say, Jerry - but I "think" I agree with you. Clearly these think-tank "gurus" have never been to Sofia - or the other cities the so blithely label - so just file their opinions under April Fool Joke and feel sorry for whoever paid for this nonsense.

The failure of information classifies Sofia as a dangerous city.

Sofia by far is a city that you can call \"Home\" with Charisma.
