Commenting article: EU Considers Sanctions Against the US Because Of Surveillance

European Parliament might not approve the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, unless the US National Security Agency (NSA) stops the mass surveillance.

On Wednesday the MEPs voted a resolution in which they set out their findings and recommendations to boost EU citizens' privacy, after a six-month inquiry in NSA's mass surveillance schemes. The resolution was backed by 544 votes to 78, with 60 abstentions.

„Parliament's should withhold its consent to the final Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal with the US unless it fully respects EU fundamental rights,“ said the the resolution, adding that data protection should be ruled out of the trade talks. This consent “could be endangered as long as blanket mass surveillance activities and the interception of communications in EU institutions and diplomatic representations are not fully stopped," notes the text.

The text also calls on the EU to suspend its bank data deal with the US and the “Safe Harbour agreement” on data privacy.

„The fight against terrorism can never justify secret and illegal mass surveillance,“ the resolution said.

EU immediately ceases all trade with the US and instead apply to become a satellite state of China and signs exclusive trade agreements with North Korea and Syria. - See more at

To An American, Bulgaria has very low debt by international standards.

If Bulgaria was to lead the world it would nof go bankrupt.

economic or trade sanctions are sometimes strong as a threat but rarely a good thing when applied - because both sides are losing. The EU is not entirely honest here: if you look at how many laws in most EU countries have been changed in the last years in order to make access to personal data and spying on its citizens very easy for the intelligence services of the respective countries, the message seems to be: it's good when we Europeans spy on our own citizens and bad when others are doing it. But as a citizen it shouldn't matter if your elementary rights are being violated by an intelligence service of your own or a foreign country. Right now the whole discussion in the EU seems to be exclusively about how to protect the EU citizens from violations committed by foreign intelligence services only. So this whole talk about sanctions or not is just distracting the attention of the public from the fact that no EU government is planning steps to really protect the elementary rights of their citizens.

Besides, the US is not anymore the "biggest economy". It's smaller than China and for most indicators also smaller than the EU (which can be considered as one economy for that matter).

My ethnic Turkish moslem brother George Zheliazkov is completely right when he demands that the EU immediately ceases all trade with the US and instead apply to become a satellite state of China and signs exclusive trade agreements with North Korea and Syria. Bravo Gosho!

The cyrillic alphabet predates America by a thousand years or so... Think about it if you are capable of rational thought.

EP/EC is distraught because no one listens to them. As they have come to realize, the US works with individual European countries on intelligence matters.

An American - 12 Mar 2014 // 19:42:00

Perhaps Bulgaria would prefer to be the leader of the world. Let me imagine what that would look like. First they would change the alphabet so no one would be able to read anything. This would mean changing all the road signs in the world. Except, of course, STOP signs, because this is acceptable for some odd reason. Then....there would be no then; at this point the world economy would already have gone bankrupt.

George Zheliazkov - 12 Mar 2014 // 18:03:37

Well obviously there is some wisdom going on there and the EU is not entirely oblivious…

Listen, the US is all about itself. Being a superpower and keeping it that way, having the largest economy and keeping it that way, being the “leader” of the world and keeping it that way and etc (judging by the speeches of Obama)…. So practically there can’t be any rules on achieving all that and maintaining it. As far as the EU – US relationship is concerned the US may end up being more trouble than good…. Stirring all those geopolitical tensions, which are on its way to bring the EU economy to a halt.
