Collapse of talks a blow to European ?balance of power as Kremlin sanctions ?trump historic trade deal
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard
Twenty years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine is slipping back under Kremlin control. Ukraine’s shock decision to opt for Vladimir Putin’s Russia and pull out of EU talks on the eve of an historic deal is a dramatic upset to the European balance of power. It is the first major defeat for the EU in its eastward march since the fall of Communism. While the region’s geopolitics remain fluid, the upset may prove as fateful as the move by the Kossack chief Bohdan Khmelnytsky to turn his back on the West and accept Tsarist suzerainty in the 1640s.
“Ukraine’s government suddenly bowed deeply to the Kremlin. The politics of brutal pressure evidently work,” said Karl Bildt, Sweden’s Foreign Minister....
maybe not joining EU is the best thing to do for them. why join a gang that take everything from you, then look at you as you are a beggar and/or a thief ?
all EU wants is political influence and a market for their goods and services. when it comes to your needs, you're not worthy to sit at their table.
i doubt ukraine took the decision for the people's benefit. but it was still a better choice.
Luckily for Bulgaria, Russia was on its knees when its former client state went west or this could have happened here. As for Timoshenko, she stole a billion dollars by playing the political game and now she pays for it. No sympathy there, and the EU were wrong to pin her to their flag - there must be some more worthy political prisoners in Kiev's jails...
"AFTER Ukraine joins the EU...And once the Ukrainian economy sinks, the EU can just buy up everything"--- absolutely so, alas. Think Ukrainian leaders will finally "join" Ukraine to EU, and without any Referendum, sure.......
But the Ambrose+Evans-Pritchard' idiocy puzzles. What on earth Kremlin's "control/brutal pressure" when "Kremlin" can't even"control" gas stealing just by Ukraine!? What on earth "fateful as the move by Bohdan Khmelnytsky to turn his back on the West and accept Tsarist suzerainty in the 1640s", when just Bohdan turned to Russia!? What on earth "Putin has been tightening the screws for months", when Russia has implied NO ONE sanction while those very "months"? What on earth "Putin has offered a three-way dialogue with the EU and Ukraine", when it was Ukraine which "has offered" it!?, etc, etc....The whole article as the mixture of the poorly disguised hatred, complete ignorance and primitive lie....And NO ONE word about the possibility of the Ukrainian people to decide their destiny by themselves, no one even hint (!) on Referendum...No such option for Ukrainians, right, Ambrose+Evans-Pritchard?
>>>The EU has accused the government of “selective justice” against opposition leaders, including former premier Yulia Tymoshenko<<
That's funny, I have never heard the EU want impartial justice, because that would include their favorite crook Tymoshenko. Yes, she is targeted crook, while in Yanukovych block there are crooks as well that don't get jail. Instead of the EU saying, "fine, you captured one crook, now do the same to the other side" no, instead they scream "injustice! You jailed our crook! This is selective justice!" says the selective EU.
Look at it from a justice impartial stance, for once one of those politician crooks gets jail-time, you have a start and could expand upon that. But no! Not as long as the crook happens to be kiss EU butts n showing Russia the middle finger, then justice should be showed aside. If it's one of Yanukovych's crooks, THEN you could start with justice, not Tymoshenko, she and her crooks got immunity according to the west.
You got it wrong, lol pal, it's the EU that will come on its knees. Russia lifted the Ukrainian economy after the previous President turned his back to Russia. That guy torpedoed the economy, following EU commands. And now the EU can't even save its own economy, it offers nothing to Ukraine and you think Ukraine will come begging? Begging for what? For more of nothing? I think you should take this article by the cold-war butthurt dinosaur from the Telegraph, with a grain of salt...
Irony, the EU said to Ukraine during Yushchenko to cut out Russia, is now accusing Russia for doing the same thing. So, the EU has the Ukrainian economy best interest at heart? Why flip flopping? Hypocrites, the EU would welcome Russia doing everything to they accuse Russia of doing, AFTER Ukraine joins the EU, nothing would make them happier. And once the Ukrainian economy sinks, the EU can just buy up everything and its citizens can live the EU "paradise".
"Six months down the line, when left alone to deal with Russian pressure, he will come to us on his knees". Disgusting. I am not even sure mafia associates use these kind of sentences. The people paying for this situation of course are the people in Ukraine, if there is some justice they should make a referendum and ask the people to decide.
