Commenting article: Bulgarian MPs Propose Keeping New Drivers Off Highways

The Bulgarian government is drafting an amendment on the Road Traffic Law, which would forbid beginner drivers to take highways.

Deputies of the ruling Socialist party have proposed that beginners with up to 3 years of experience should not be allowed to drive on highways, where the speed limit is 140 km/h. Instead, they would have to take the detours, where the maximum is 90 km/h, writes Standartnews.

The draft amendment will be discussed on October 20, together with a proposal for new drivers of up to 6 months to be forbidden from driving after 10 PM.

Taro is right.

This is a very Bulgarian solution to a problem. More legislation, more red tape, more government - and of course it will not work. The problem of appalling driving standards is not a legislative one, it's a social one. Drunk driving is still socially acceptable. Young men still impress young girls by driving like (c word deleted) around studenskigrad and beyond. The laws, as they stand, are fine. It's the enforcement that's the problem, but that gets filed under "too hard". NB - In my experience the worst drivers on the highway are not the youth, it's any hairy arrogant (people with doubtful parentage) in their BMW's and Merc's which (cars that are far too quick for their slow moving brains) that think they have a god given right to drive right up the chuff of anyone going slower than them, flashing their lights like they're at a 90's rave that are the problem. Them and anyone associated with government...

This is just idiotic. Beginner drivers may have learned in the driving courses how to drive on highways and then left 3 years without the possibility to make any progress on driving on high speed.
Then after 3 years suddenly they are allowed to drive on highways without any experience and then what will happen? They will crash...

perfect - keep new drivers off of the new, safe roads, and route them through the small villages with poor roads and non-existent street lighting... another genius idea from the cabinet of "experts"

I knew it, Comrade Pepperoni! The only way you could describe me so well is through working for DANS.... ;)

The government should consider extending the restriction to drivers like Seedy, who has been banned several times for being DUI, and can often be seen weaving erratically around fakulteta in his moskovich, with a bottle of rakia in one hand, a copy of The Sun in the other, and a bag of chips perched on his grotesquely swollen belly.
