It`s so stupid that there is no mention of Turkish (or common Turkic for early medieval ages) despite all the personal names and placenames mentioned in this article has a meaning in today`s Turkish. Like the surnames with "Cara, Kara" meaning black/dark in Turkish or the names of the sons of Khan Kubrat like "Altsiok". Altsiok is just a Latin/Greek derivation of "Alt? ok" meaning "Six arrows" in Turkish.

Tribe or personal names like that was some kind of norm between early medieval Turkic peoples. There was other names like "Ten arrows", "On Ok, On Oq" in Turkish too. The medieval Hungarians were the "On Oq" and this Turkic word has been deformed in Latin/Greek as "Onogurs". There was "Three arrows, Five arrows" too, as "?? Ok, Uchok", "Be? ok, Beshok" in Turkish.

Also, there is no such a thing as "proto-Bulgarian" because current Bulgarian language is slavic and the so-called proto-Bulgarian wasn't slavic at all. It was Turkic, nothing else. In that sense, there is no such a thing as proto slavic Bulgarians. The real Bulgars was speaking Turkic and they have been assimilated by the eastern Romans after they have been christianized by their missionaries like Cyril&Methodious. Your distant cousins, Volga Bulgars is still speaking their ancestors Turkic tongue unlike you Danube Bulgarians.

So, you can deny as much as you like because of Ottoman era but you cant change the truth. The truth is; the very first Bulgars who founded Bulgarian kingdom in Danube was the Turks. Second Bulgarian kingdom was also founded by the Turks but by the Cumans, another Turkic tribe. Therefore, the kingdom of Avars, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey (Seljuk and Ottoman empires) has been founded by the descendants of the Huns. The Onogurs (Hungarians) converted as catholics, Bulgars (Bulgaria) converted as orthodoxs, Oghuzs (Turkey) converted as muslims.

GAR, on the other hand is composed of "AR" (Arian man). Arian man/leader and soldier!

You say in Eglish (adopted) "garison" and this word is for sure connected to "military".

In Sumer, the BULL was the symbol of the local "god", and BOGARS (the ancient Thracians) received another variation of their ethno, that is BUL-gar!

And it is known that the Huns and the Scythians are DIRECT descendants from the SUMERIANS!

spa05akw - 14 Feb 2012 // 19:11:05

KAH/KHAN means "LEADER" and GAR means "SOLDIER". SUMER was ruled by Bulgarian "lord soldiers", i.e. KANGARS/KHANGARS!

spa05akw - 14 Feb 2012 // 19:08:51

Yes, Khan was indeed a Bulgarian title! It is NOT T?rkic or Persian - IT IS SUMERIAN! Selfname of SUMER, was called by Bulgarian soldiers, KANGAR/CANGAR (KAN + GAR). Period.

Dude, do not talk crap. Atilla was BULGAIAN and of Thracian origin (BULGARIANS = THRACIANS). Bulgarians were EVERYWHERE, so no wonder many people claim him. The founder of Modern Bulgaria was grandchild of Attila. We have also Volga Bulgarian muslim sources.

For sure, Atill was NOT Ungarian. The Mayars, who came from Volga Bulgaria, did not come before 895 AD!

Yane - 2 Jun 2011 // 17:37:32

Sorry Taralezhkov, but all of Europe claimed descent from Attila for his former vast Empire in Europe..

Also, Bulgarian leaders never called themselves Khans, that's an assumption and not based in historical evidence.

Liked the rest of the story though.
