Commenting article: Octopus Paul: Tentacles Up for Spain

Paul the Octopus forecast that Spain will be the winner at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

According to the psychic cephalopod from Sea Life in Oberhausen, western Germany, Spain will win its first championship in its football history.

Paul the Octopus became a World Cup phenomenon after correctly predicting the result in all Germany's matches.

Of course it's doable, and that's what's going to make even a low-scoring game exciting. You still don't seem to see the clash of forces as part of the excitement, which is often more exciting than a humdrum goal.

However, if it turns out that "Paul" is right, it's going to make headlines nearly equal to the matches themselves. Dino seems to be roaming the net for material on this point, and he seems to be doing very well. It gets more and more comical as the later reports come in.

As I see it, if the finalist teams are as equal as they should be, the proper ending is a penalty shoot-out.

Nice link!

Nellieot, bill and others:

Please enjoy both games (Saturday and Sunday). I think the bottom line here is that this is a European final and we must cherish it (Viva Europa!):

I don't know anyone in his right mind who would put money on the predictions of the octopus. It does make sense for Spain to win the cup, they are the European champions. However, Switzerland did beat Spain, so what does this say about Switzerland? And the Netherlands did beat Brazil, the #1 ranked team.

Spain and the Netherlands are so different in their style of play. The Netherlands should not be allowed to wear shoes with cleats, they kick like mules! it will be a boring match, no one is going to score.

Germany is definitely kicking Uruguayan arse. Both teams have very similar style of play and it should be a fun match, with plenty of goals.

You got it right. This is how Paul predicted it.

ROFLOL = Rolling on the Floor (and) Laughing Out Loud.

He who laughs last, laughs best. You will not be laughing on Sunday after the results are in:

#1 Spain
#2 Netherlands
#3 Germany
#4 Uruguay

This is entirely doable, and the octopu$$y concurs. lol

The bookies should know by now that their money is safe if they bet on Paul's winner.

Are you having as much trouble trying to stop laughing as I am?

Dino - 9 Jul 2010 // 21:10:24

One thing is for sure. All the bookies would probably want Paul fried right away:

This is moving swiftly from the silly to the ridiculous! First it's a fish story, and now it's for the birds!

Dino - 9 Jul 2010 // 20:07:43

Sorry the bird is from Singapore.

No need to provoke Mrs. Dutch, I agree.

Meanwhile the plot thickness; apparently there is a parakeet from Thailand who is predicting Holland as the winner.

That madness is what makes this whole thing so terribly funny.

Another item on last night's news here is that the designer who designed Jogi L?w's blue cashmere sweater is having to go into extra production to meet a sudden demand beyond belief! Cashmere, no less. That's not cheap.

Dutch - 9 Jul 2010 // 17:51:40

I saw that on the German news last night. I wonder if Dutch has signed up???"

My bet is still on the Dutch becoming world champion. This world has gone somewhat mad as people really put value in those "predictions".

And no, I did not sign up. I am not a fan of Twitter and even less of pornstars. Besides those already deciding factors.....I'm married and my wife knows karate better than I no intention of risking life and limbs. :-)

Rooting for the Dutch has its own problems for one's reputation. Exhibiting loyalty to the Dutch cause might easily ruin one's reputation:

This is hilarious indeed.
