Gazprom Predicts 40% Drop in Natural Gas Prices for Bulgaria

Business | December 12, 2008, Friday // 00:00

A spokesperson of the Russian energy giant Gazprom announced Friday that the price of natural gas that the company provides to Bulgaria was going to decrease by 30-40% in 2009.

The Press Secretary of the Chair of the Governing Board of Gazprom Sergei Kupriyanov said the expected drop would be the result of the large decrease of world oil prices in the recent months.

Yet, Kupriyanov pointed out it was impossible to predict exactly what the natural gas prices would be during 2009.

Kupriyanov and the CEO of Gazexport Ilya Kochervin, which is 100% subsidiary of Gazprom, announced the global financial crisis would likely reduce the amount of Russian natural gas supplies for Europe but did not say how significant the decrease would be.

Kupriyanov said the South Stream Project was not going to be affected by the global financial crisis as it was still in the preliminary planning phase.

Kupriyanov and Kochervin were on an official one-day visit to Sofia where they met with the Chair of the Parliamentary Budget Committee and former Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov.
