SNM READY TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR GOVERNANCE
Politics | July 5, 2001, Thursday // 00:00
`The Simeon II National Movement (SNM) is ready to assume the responsibility for the country`s governance. The movement has repeatedly stated its readiness in principle to share this responsibility with those political forces, which back its ideas`, MP Plamen Panayotov, floor leader of the SNM, said during the inaugural sitting of Parliament on Thursday. He declared the SNM`s willingness to form the nucleus of a strong coalition government. The SNM won the parliamentary vote of June 17, falling one seat short of absolute majority in the 240-member parliament. Among the key objectives of the SNM Coalition Panayotov mentioned `a substantial change in living standards`. The SNM considers it essential to improve the infrastructure and develop telecommunications, the energy sector, tourism and agriculture as key sectors. It will strive to create new education and career opportunities, decisively combat crime in all its aspects, optimise the operation of the judiciary, ensure effective protection of citizens` rights, and develop civil society. `Regardless of which political forces will share in the country`s governance, we will work together to achieve Bulgaria`s fundamental political goals: membership of the European Union and NATO`, Panayotov said.
