Russia's Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizhov stated Wednesday that he expected that Bulgaria would veto any potential EU sanctions against Russia, mediapool.bg reported citing Chizhov's interview with the Brussels correspondent of the Bulgarian National Radio.
Chizhov pointed out that as a full member of the EU Bulgaria had the right to block the decisions to impose sanctions on Russia, which require the consensus of all member states.
He did say, however, that he did not believe EU would impose any sanctions on his country.
"I hope that the common sense will prevent the EU from imposing sanctions, and that therefore Bulgaria would not have to block them", Chizhov stated adding the Union had reasonable leaders who understood that any sanctions against Russia would be useless.
His Excellency also made it clear that key energy projects with Russian participation such as the construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant, and the South Stream gas transit pipeline would not be affected in any way by EU's decision.
Chizhov's statement comes a day before the Bulgarian PM Stanishev's visit to Moscow on Thursday, where he will meet with the Russian PM Vladimir Putin in order to discuss the bilateral energy projects.
